Pre-operative Instructions

Hospital & Surgery Center Pre-operative Instructions

  • DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING, EVEN WATER, AFTER MIDNIGHT on the night before your procedure unless your anesthesiologist or physician instruct you differently.  This is important to prevent vomiting during surgery which could have serious consequences for you.  Similarly, take only necessary prescription medicines like heart and blood pressure medicine.  TAKE ALL YOUR EYE DROPS THE MORNING OF SURGERY!

  • You may brush your teeth and gargle on the morning of surgery, but do not swallow any water.

  • Please shower or bathe the night before or the morning of surgery.

  • If you smoke, do not do so after midnight.

  • Notify your doctor if you develop any sign of illness before the date of your surgery.  Report symptoms such as: fever, sore throat, infection, breathing difficulties, or chest pain.

  • PLEASE ARRANGE FOR SOMEONE TO DRIVE YOU HOME.  For your safety, you will not be allowed to drive home after sedation or anesthesia.

  • A RESPONSIBLE ADULT MUST BE PRESENT to take you home when you are ready to leave the hospital.

  • We strongly recommend that ALL patients have an adult at home with them for the first 24 hours after surgery.  If you have a general anesthetic, you MUST have an adult at home with you for the first 24 hours.

  • Valuables and jewelry should be left at home.  The hospital cannot be responsible for the loss or damage of such items.

  • Wear casual, loose-fitting and comfortable clothing.  A gown will be provided.

  • Ladies, please remove make up before you arrive.

  • A parent or legal guardian must accompany a minor.

Post-operative Instructions

  • INCREASING PAIN AND/OR DECREASING VISION CAN BE A SIGN OF INFECTION OR INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE RISE.  If you experience increasing pain and/or decreasing vision call the office immediately.

  • SHADOWS IN YOUR SIDE VISION CAN BE A SIGN OF RETINAL DETACHMENT.  If you experience a loss of side or central vision, call the office immediately for evaluation.

  • Leave on your patch overnight until you are seen in the office the following day.

  • Tylenol or Advil is OK for pain unless you have a medical contraindication to these drugs.

  • Resume all of your pre-op medications unless specifically instructed not to.

  • Avoid aspirin for 2 weeks after surgery.

  • If you had a retinal detachment repair, avoid recreational reading for 2 weeks.

  • If you were instructed to hold your head in a certain position, this is very important to the success of your operation.

  • Bring in any eye drops you take to your post-operative visits.

  • It is OK to get the eye wet and to shower after your patch is removed, keep the eye clean.
