Optic Nerve Drusen

Optic nerve drusen - pictured to the right - are buried calcium deposits in the optic nerve head.  They rarely cause vision loss. If the optic nerve drusen are severe, peripheral vision can be affected.  Patients with optic nerve head drusen usually also have anomalous branching pattern of the retinal vessels.  Before becoming calcified, when patients are young, optic nerve drusen can cause the optic nerve head to look elevated like it looks in eyes of patients with papilledema.  This is called pseudo-papilledema.
